The manufactured component, when sufficiently cured and removed from the mould, presents the gelcoated surface. This is usually pigmented to provide a coloured, glossy surface which improves the aesthetic appearance of the article, such as the surface of a boat hull. Many marine craft and some aircraft are manufactured using composite materials with an outer layer of gelcoat, typically 0.5 mm to 0.8 mm (0.02 in to 0.03 in) thick. Gelcoats are designed to be durable, providing resistance to ultraviolet degradation and hydrolysis.

Specialized gelcoats can be used to manufacture the moulds which in turn are used to manufacture components. These require very high levels of durability to overcome the mechanical and thermal stresses encountered during the curing and demoulding processes.

Suitable resin chemistries for the manufacture of gelcoats vary, but the most commonly encountered are unsaturated polyesters or epoxies. Within each of these categories, the resin chemistries are further subdivided. In addition to any pigment a gelcoat will, if necessary, contain a thixotropic additive to assist its tenacity to vertical portions of the mould whilst it cures

With a simple shake of our unique spray can, Dolphinite gelcoat is ready to apply. The adjustable nozzle lets you choose a broad spray to cover large areas quickly, or a narrow spray to finely control application. No special equipment is required.

T-Wax Sealant is a one-step product that can be applied even in extreme hot or cold weather. Easy on, easy off application saves time and aggravation.Use T-Wax Sealant on fiberglass, clear coats, automotive and airplane paints, and chrome. It guards against chalking and fading from UV light, as well as damage from acid rain, soot, coal dust, and airplane exhaust.

Gelcoat is a liquid that hardens to form a thick layer that's used to protect fiberglass and give it a shiny, smooth finish. Applying gelcoat to fiberglass is simple if you have the right tools and take care to mix your gelcoat properly.

Our premium, high-viscosity marine gelcoat is non-sagging, and super strong. In fact, its ISO/NPG (Isophthalic/Neopentyl Glycol) resins are considerably more durable than standard, orthophthalic resin formulas. TotalBoat marine gel coat can be colored prior to adding catalyst. Adding color to Neutral gel coat produces bold or dark colors; adding color to a white gelcoat creates lighter, pastel colors.

Adjust the catalyst level to slow down or speed up gel time. Cooler temperatures may require a higher percentage of catalyst than warmer temperature conditions.Proper catalyzation is imperative for proper cure when using polyester. The higher the percentage of hardener, the faster the gelcoat will dry. Because air and surface temperatures also affect the drying of gelcoat, take care not to over-catalyze or under-catalyze. Do not add less than 1% catalyst or greater than 3% catalyst. We recommend a trial batch to determine final catalyst ratio.

Our range of specialist polyester gelcoats currently include chemical resistant gelcoat and epoxy compatible brush gelcoat. All are supplied with catalyst and can be delivered as soon as the next day.

Polyester Material Info: Polyester resins are the most commonly used matrix in the marine and composite industry. These resins are styrene-based, flammable and catalyzed when combined with Methyl Ethyl Ketone Peroxide(MEKP). When working with these resins in large projects it is advised to use gloves and a chemical respirator to protect yourself from the fumes. These resins can be used with any type of fiberglass, carbon fiber or kevlar, as well as used over urethane foam and other sandwich core materials. These resins tend to be fairly rigid when cured and also more brittle than epoxy resins. Sales Info: All resins and gelcoats are sold without wax(sanding aid): If needed you can purchase surfacing wax separately for use on finishing coats. Unwaxed resin can be re-coated with little to no prep work but will leave a tacky surface. Mix the wax(sanding aid) with your resin only on your final coats in order to allow easy sanding. Catalyst/Mixing Ratios: All resin prices include catalyst. 1 Quart= 1ounce, 1 Gallon=2ounce, 5gal=6ounce. The amounts included can be varied based on your temperature and desired curing times. Cooler temperatures may require a higher % of catalyst than warm conditions. If additional catalyst(MEKP) is needed please order separately. Click Here To View Our Catalyst Mixing Information(.pdf format). Shelf Life: When purchasing our resins we guarantee their performance for 3 months after your purchase if stored at room temperature with their lids sealed. These resins can last longer than our 3 month guarantee, but we recommended testing a small cup of the resin before using it on an important project. Also, if the resins sit for over a month, we recommended shaking the sealed can or stirring the contents to ensure all solids are properly distributed. Shipping Info: Because polyester resins are a flammable liquid, we are unable to ship these products by air freight. Quarts and Gallons can be shipped by Ground with no extra fees with a maximum of one gallon per box. 5 Gallon pails can be shipped by UPS Ground only and require an additional $34.00 Hazardous Fee(charged by UPS). Orders for multiple 5 GAL pails can be shipped by a common carrier(freight line) but require delivery to a commercial location. Safety Details: Use personal protective equipment as required. Wear Protective Gloves. Wear eye and face protection. Keep away from heat, sparks, open flames and hot surfaces. NO Smoking. Use explosion-proof electrical, ventilating, lighting and all material-handling equipment. Use only non-sparking tools. Take precautionary measures against static discharge. Keep containers tightly sealed. Use only in outdoors or in well-ventilated area. Avoid breathing vapor. Wash hands thoroughly after handling. See safety data sheet for detailed information.

Polyester Gelcoats Notes For Gelcoat Application When Spraying: We recommend thinning the gelcoat at about 10% by volume with STYRENE(see link to purchase). This will allow better flow through your gun and better atomization. When Brushing or Rolling: Adding about 5% to 10% Styrene will help the gelcoat flow out better and reduce brush/roll marks. Remember when brushing gelcoat, un-even thicknesses can cause wrinkling to occur. Tooling gelcoats especially require even thicknesses when applying. Please test your brushing method with these gelcoats before starting on an important project.

Ed Vondell, COO of Thursday Pools, noted the valued technical and product support that CCP Composites has provided with Bill Bannow, Technical Services Engineer and Jason Baranowski, Account Manager. Both have spent long hours in specialized support staff training in the use of the Shimmer products, and more recently, introducing the CCP Composites rapid mold manufacturing technology that utilizes the OptiPLUS mold making materials for a brand new Thursday Pools design launching in 2014. The outlook for Thursday Pools and Shimmer gel coat looks quite promising in 2014 and beyond.
